Miss. Shelby Meyer - Independent Study Teacher

I was born and raised in Oroville, which helps me associate closely with my students and the community, though I recently moved to Chico. I attended schools in the Palermo District and Las Plumas High School. I went to Butte College for two years where I earned my AA in Liberal Studies, and went on to CSU, Chico where I graduated with my BA in Liberal Studies in 2013 with Summa Cum Laude Honors. I spent two semesters completing the CSU, Chico credential program and student teaching in a second and a fifth grade classroom and I completed my credential as a certified teacher in May 2014. I then was hired at STREAM, where I taught second grade for five years. I now am moving onto my next teaching adventure as an independent study teacher to 4th-8th graders!

I come from a teaching family: my mother was a teacher for 36 years and my sister is a second grade teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I can remember and I’m excited to be fulfilling this lifelong dream. Now that I have five years of teaching experience under my belt, I am looking forward to perfecting my craft and challenging myself in new ways in the coming years.

Before becoming a teacher, I spent six years working at Ishi Hills Middle School After School Program through Butte County Office of Education. At Ishi, I had the pleasure of working with sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. I have been trained in and taught various activities to these students including LEGO Robotics.

The outdoors is a great love of mine. I especially like fishing and swimming. I also enjoy yoga, reading, cooking (I have my own cooking show my fiance and I run on an app), fixing up houses (I move way too much), and traveling. I spend my free time with my family, friends, and pets. In my immediate family, I have two sisters (Carly and Riki), two step brothers (Sam and Cory), two cats (Granger (based on the Harry Potter books) and Keanu), two dogs (Kobe (our youngest) and Dash (our oldest)), my beautiful mother who has taught me everything, my step-dad, and my dad. I also have my wonderful fiance, Daniel, who has been by my side since my first year teaching. We are currently busy planning our wedding, renovating our new home in Chico, and both taking on new roles at work.

I am looking forward to another great year at STREAM. I cannot wait to challenge, teach, and learn from 4th-8th graders as I build this new independent study program at STREAM. I am excited to continue doing hands-on science labs when I meet with my students in person, and use even more technology with our newest applications. I am looking forward to helping instill my students with new knowledge and life skills, primarily through science and experimentation. Here’s to another year at STREAM!
