Mrs. Gwen Friberg - First Grade

I believe that I have the best job in the world and am passionate about teaching students to become their best selves.  I have been teaching for nearly two decades in various schools here in Oroville as well as Bakersfield, California. My calling for teaching students began as a high school student as I volunteered in public school classrooms and at my local church.  I graduated from Point Loma University in San Diego in 1996 where I stayed and received my teaching credential as well as a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

I began my teaching career in 1997, teaching 5th grade at the onset of NCLB and state standards.  As I worked with older students and began to see the need for intervention in the area of reading and writing, my passion to reach them in the younger grades grew.  I then spent several years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade, attending multiple trainings on early reading intervention. My family and I moved to the Oroville area to be closer to family in 2008 where I subbed several years in various schools throughout the county.  In 2010 I was hired in Palermo where I taught 1st and 2nd grades with an incredible staff and my knowledge and experience with emergent readers increased.

In 2014, I had the incredible opportunity to help open Stream and haven’t looked back since!  I have always believed in the philosophy of student engagement, hands on discovery, and student collaboration as being key to a child’s development.  At Stream, I have been very blessed to implement these values in my classroom along with the joy and challenge of teaching young students how to read, write, and problem solve.  I truly believe I have the best job in the world!

Aside from teaching, I am a mother to four incredible sons and the wife to an amazing man!  We soak up our family time together hiking, kayaking, watching our sons’ soccer games and family BBQ’s.  On my downtime, I practice yoga and enjoy playing the piano.

I love my family, community, and the opportunity to serve at Stream!
