Ms. Melissa Bailey - Second Grade
I’m Melissa Bailey, and this is my first year teaching at STREAM! I am so excited to be joining the wonderful family that exists here, and I am looking forward to getting to know the staff, students, and families of STREAM.
I was born in Marin County and spent twenty-one years there until I moved to Chico to pursue a bachelors in Liberal Studies and a minor in Spanish at Chico State. Once I graduated, I went right into the credential program. I student taught in a Spanish-immersion kindergarten classroom (taught in 90% Spanish and 10% English) at Rosedale Elementary and a fourth grade classroom at Chapman Elementary. I loved teaching both grades, which left me feeling very open to teaching any grade K-5. Since I graduated half-way through the elementary school year, I spent the next few months substituting in different classrooms and schools in Chico. The following August I was hired as a full-time teacher at Paradise Elementary School.
This is now my fourth year teaching and third year with 2nd graders. I spent my first year as a 5th grade teacher which was a wonderful year and happily moved to 2nd grade where I have chosen to stay ever since (I LOVE 2nd grade!). My first three years of teaching were all spent at Paradise Elementary School, until our school burned down on November 8th, and we moved to Oroville. This was an extremely challenging time in my career, but it opened this new opportunity for me to come to STREAM, which I am very thankful for. I have spent the summer gathering new supplies and creating a bright, colorful, cozy environment for my upcoming 2nd graders, which has been a very healing experience for my teacher self. I am excited to fill this new space with learning, growing, and collaboration.
I still live in Chico, where I spend most of my free time outdoors. I love to hike, camp, backpack, fish, and kayak. I’m a member of two women’s hiking groups, where we explore and adventure together all throughout Norcal. I also love cooking, reading, and growing vegetables in my garden. I have a golden retriever named Kinley, who loves to join in on all of my outdoor adventures. I just got engaged to my sweet fiancé Ryan back in March, and we are in the process of planning our upcoming wedding! My family is a huge part of my life, and I try to spend as much time as I can with them, although they are still living in the Bay Area.
I am looking forward to both exploring new curriculum and implementing curriculum that I have used before this year at STREAM. We will be doing hands-on science experiments, learning about the different people that make up our community, and even working up to adding and subtracting triple digit numbers! I can’t wait to continue to grow as a teacher, and for all of the things, my new 2nd graders will teach me.
